Add Sub-domain

A dataset can consist of an unlimited number of sub-domains.  Sub-domains can be used to treat multiple domains as if they are all part of the same contiguous dataset.  For example, a website may consist of domains like: www.bobsfruitsite.com, secure.bobsfruitsite.com, and members.bobsfruitsite.com.  Adding all of these together into one dataset treats them as one big dataset.  Of course, domains such as this can also be included in the Alternate Domain names section of the dataset setup.  (See Advanced Setup). But there is an important distinction--domains that are listed as alternates are all considered to be essentially the same, whereas sub-domains are treated as separate entities that are part of the same dataset.

To illustrate this point, consider two pages:

www.bobsfruitsite.com/index.html

members.bobsfruitsite.com/index.html

If they are treated as alternate domains in the domain setup, these will be counted together as the very same page.  If they are added as sub-domains, they will be counted separately as different pages.  So if you want to track visitors movements from the main website into the members website, the sub-domain would be the proper setup.

To add a sub-domain, click on the 'Add Subdomain' control to the right of the dataset name.

The subsequent form is fairly simple, since much of the data is inherited from the dataset.  The Advanced Setup form contains all the same field as that for the dataset set up.  (In fact, the first two tabs of the dataset setup is the same thing as this form.  You are simply creating the first domain in that case.

Generally, you will have the same settings for this domain as you do for the other domains in this dataset.  It is usually just the sub-domain name and website that change.
